About Jacob Gotwals, MA
I’m a professional counselor. I'm motivated by the care and compassion I feel for my clients, and I'm inspired by the healing and growth my clients have experienced through therapy.

My approach to therapy is eclectic; I bring all my knowledge, experience, and intuition to my work with each client. Below are some approaches I draw from.
To help people recover from trauma and resolve distressing memories, emotions, and beliefs, I often use EMDR therapy (a healing process involving focusing attention on these distressing experiences). I’m proud to be certified as an EMDR therapist by the EMDR International Association.
My thinking about relationships is informed by attachment theory (a theory about emotional bonds between people), emotionally focused therapy (an approach to strengthening a couple’s emotional bond developed by psychologist Sue Johnson), the work of psychologists John and Julie Gottman (who have researched what makes relationships work well), and the work of psychologist Stan Tatkin.
To help heal attachment issues, I often use guided imagery with ideal parent figures (an approach developed by Harvard psychologist Daniel P. Brown).
Empathy and unconditional positive regard (as taught by psychologists Carl Rogers and Marshall Rosenberg) and awareness of thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors (which is the focus of cognitive behavioral therapy) are important aspects of my work.
I draw on other approaches as needed, including motivational interviewing (which can help build motivation to change problematic habits), mindfulness training (which can build the capacity to notice and attend to present-moment experiences), and sensate focus (an approach to healing sexual issues based on suggestions for how clients can engage in touch with their partners between therapy sessions).

I welcome a diversity of clients. I’m LGBTQ friendly/affirming and kink friendly/affirming. I’m anti-racist, and I welcome clients who have experienced any form of oppression. I’m poly friendly/affirming; I welcome both monogamous and polyamorous clients (however, due to limitations in my systems, I am currently unable to provide couples/relationship therapy with more than two clients together).

In my personal life, I have extensive experience practicing mind-body practices such as meditation, breathwork, ecstatic movement, and qigong. I continually seek opportunities to learn and grow. I’ve published two books on spirituality and meditation. I feel connected to the land and sky and have done landscape and storm photography. I have a Ph.D. in computer science, and I worked as a software engineer in a previous career.
